Making Swindon a magnet for young professionals

An exciting new programme is set to make Swindon the place to be for professionals in their thirties and forties.

On 14 June 2018, the 'Switch on to Swindon' campaign held an event at the 'Carriage Works' business centre. Around 200 guests heard about the second stage of an inward investment programme that will entice young professionals to the town.

This second stage follows a successful first phase, which saw 600 business leaders becoming ambassadors for the town and receiving materials to spread the word.

Marketing professionals from Intel and Nationwide, who had volunteered their time and expertise, identified that Swindon needs to attract 'aspirational homeowners'. Guests learned that Swindon is an appealing location for this target market, thanks to its typically lower house prices.

Additionally, young professionals desire a better 'work-life' balance, and to purchase properties and start families – but within striking distance of London, Bath and Bristol. And that's where Swindon ticks all the boxes.

New developments also add to the tempting mix. These include the North Star Village – due to open in 2021 – which will be home to the UK's biggest snow centre and Europe's largest IMAX cinema screen. The Carriage Works, which is a converted railway workshop, also offers businesses affordable space in a desirable location.

Beyond homeowners, Switch on to Swindon also has entrepreneurs in its sights. The campaign aims to attract people starting their own businesses or seeking to relocate their companies, such as independent retailers.
