Bombweed: An Unexpected Experience of Wiltshire by Maureen Armstrong

Margaret’s novel, based on her wartime experiences and published by her daughters, forms the basis of this interesting talk; an intimate perspective from a lady who’d never expected to discover the county of Wiltshire that she grew to love. This is a September Special event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Book onto any 3 of our WW2 events and get the cheapest free. Even Swindon Community Centre, Jennings Street, 7-9pm
September’s talk is titled ‘Not Forgotten - A Three Part Tale’. Peter Williams presents a three part tale which deals with the effects of the Great War as social history. Peter discusses the contrasts in how the casualties from the wealthier strata’s of society were memorialized with how those from the working classes were remembered. All classes suffered terribly, but some were better placed to ensure that their losses were not forgotten than were others. Our monthly meetings usually take the form of a talk or a film lasting about an hour, then the slightly less formal business of the group followed by complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits.
Thursday 26th
Wiltshire’s Enemy Aliens: The Internment of Foreigners in the Second World War by Tom Plant
Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, 10:30am
The early days of the Second World War saw increasing suspicion of foreigners living in the UK. As the tides of war turned against Britain this suspicion quickly became paranoia, followed by hysteria. By early 1940 tens of thousands of people had been imprisoned without trial simply for being foreign born; many of them were Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Many were deported, most were eventually released. Few had committed any crime. This talk will explore the history of internment in Britain, and show the impact of national policies on Wiltshire’ many foreign-born citizens. This is a September Special event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Book onto any 3 of our WW2 events and get the cheapest free. Tickets £4, please reserve your tickets from localstudies@wiltshire.gov.uk or call 01249 705500.

A collection of fascinating objects and archive material from the STEAM collection are used to illustrate this story, including the famous Cheltenham Flyer headboard. This exhibition complements our other new special exhibition Time on Trial, which takes a look at the exhilarating speed trials that took place between the GWR and other railway companies between 1910 and 1948. Pride and reputation were at stake as the companies attempted to prove their locomotive building expertise. Visitors will also find out about the first dynamometer car, built by the GWR in 1838 and used to record data from the official test runs. A collection of stunning images and fascinating archive material from the STEAM collection are used to illustrate this story.
