Who are the Swindon Wildcats?
The Swindon Wildcats are a professional ice hockey team that ply their trade in the NIHL National League, which runs from September all the way through to April each year.
The Cats play their home games at the GLL Better Swindon Ice Rink and have a dedicated fanbase who consistently fill out the arena, which generates a unique and not-to-be-missed atmosphere!
The rink offers some of the best viewing points in British ice hockey and includes several VIP areas, ensuring that everyone is catered for.
Established in 1985, the Wildcats boast a rich and colourful history and proudly celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2016.
With Player/Coach Aaron Nell having assembled a competitive team on the ice and with a committed and dedicated workforce in place behind the scenes, the Swindon Wildcats are looking to move to the next level in 22/23 season.
What to expect from your first ice hockey game?
As soon as the game begins, you’ll realise that ice hockey is great fun to watch. The players are brilliant skaters who zoom up and down at incredible speeds. However, you will be grateful for the Perspex barrier separating you from the players; make sure you watch out for flying pucks!
The sport is a family-friendly environment though you may encounter the occasional ice hockey brawl! Physical contact is allowed in ice hockey between players contesting the puck, and this includes rough contact.
You’ll want to wrap up warm as the ice rink can get very cold, so be sure to bring your coat, scarf, and gloves along!
Only six players from each team can be on the ice at the same time. That consists of five skaters and a goalie. The aim of the game is to get the puck and score a goal against the opposite team.
The game consists of 3 x 20-minute periods and there are lots of game night competitions going on in the period breaks so please ensure to check them out!
