Swindon & Cricklade Railway
Swindon & Cricklade Railway (S&CR) offer round-trip passenger journeys of approximately 4.5 miles with trains running between Blunsdon and Hayes Knoll, plus an extension south to Taw Valley Halt at Mouldon Hill Country Park within the Borough of Swindon.
Blunsdon is the main 'visitor centre', with car parking, Whistle Stop Cafe, picnic area, shop etc., while Hayes Knoll gives visitors the opportunity to see various restoration projects progressing in the engine shed, now extended to include five roads.
Motive power is provided by steam and diesel locomotives. See the S&CR website to find out when they are running. Steam engines currently in service include resident Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST 'Swordfish' and guest locomotive ex GWR 0-6-2T '5619'. Diesels include examples of ex-BR Classes 03, 08 and 09 and a Class 73 electro diesel E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker', plus industrials.
The S&CR was one of the first to undertake the complete reconstruction of a standard-gauge railway with no legacy of track or buildings. It celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2018.
The S&CR host a range of events all year round – Murder Mystery Evenings, Kids for a Quid, Vintage Weekends, School Holiday Specials and Military Weekends.
