STEAM Museum of the GWR

STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway - Discover how the GWR become known as God’s Wonderful Railway.

A must see for railway enthusiasts and non-railway enthusiasts alike, STEAM is housed in a lovingly restored Grade II listed building located on the site of the world famous railway works.

The museum houses a fantastic collection of some of the greatest steam locomotives ever built and tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway. See famous locomotives, ‘drive’ the train simulator and even work the signals in an interactive GWR signal box. The kids will love it!

STEAM also holds regular ‘Meet the Railway Workers’ Days where a team of volunteers will welcome you aboard three famous locomotives, show you how the controls worked on these great engines and entertain you with fascinating anecdotes about life as a GWR engine driver or fireman.

The museum has a well-stocked souvenir shop with GWR limited edition items and it also offers you the chance to create a bespoke photo from a choice of over 1,500 historic images. Altogether now, Hoot! Hoot!
